About Butterscotch Alley

Butterscotch Bryn

What is the Butterscotch Brand?

Beginning with an innate love for drawing clothing when I was young, designing has always been the biggest part of who I am as an artist. Though in my earlier years, I thought my goal was to be a “fashion designer”, as I grew and discovered who I was as a person and artist, I eventually realized that my desires did not align with following trends and fitting to a season’s style and so now I like to go by the title “clothing designer”.

As I transitioned through different phases in my life—depression, a lacking sense of self-worth, and the resulting loss of direction and purpose—I also tossed around what I thought would be the names and themes of my brand, but I wasn’t until after I graduated from high school in 2012 that my desires as a designer culminated into one with permanence: Butterscotch Alley.

I wanted my brand to be something that reflected all those aspects of myself—all those different obstacles that I had to overcome in order to become the person I truly wanted to be—as well as inspire others with a similar purpose in life.

What is a Butterscotch Babe?

One of the biggest reasons that I did not succeed nor feel satisfied with my past lines was that they reflected my lack of purpose; they were more of raw idea that didn’t work because it wasn’t being channeled properly. In reality, the key part of being a designer and having a clothing line is to have an ideal in mind: a person who is the epitome of your purpose, the very person who you design your clothes for and want to see wearing them. This is the kind of person that, if you saw just walking down the street wearing these clothes, you would go, “Yes. This is what I strive for.”

That raw, unchanneled idea that I used to have? People would tell me things like, “It’s cool, but I personally wouldn’t wear it.” And that’s because this was a period in my life where I pushed others away, and so I was designing for myself; therefore, that’s who it spoke to: me. But it was also a period where I was really uncertain about who I wanted to become in life, and stubbornly rejected order, thus, it didn’t really have a concrete direction or a discernable meaning.

However, as I grew, I got bumped and bruised; I made mistakes and, from them, learned the kind of person I actually wanted to be. This changed that ideal into what is now the Butterscotch Babe.

And so, the real question is not, “What is a Butterscotch Babe?”, but rather:

Who is a Butterscotch Babe?

Who is the ideal girl to wear the Butterscotch Brand?

And a Butterscotch Babe is precisely as follows:

a girl who understands the balance between calm and crazy, yet can appreciate both extremes and everything in between,

a girl who sees the beauty where others might not, because once she could not see it in herself,
Butterscotch Bunny
a girl who is not an optimist, but a realist, because she’s also aware of the ugliness, and knows pretending it doesn’t exist will hurt more than help,

a girl who lives life with purpose, who strives to improve herself, not for the impressing of or the satisfaction of others, but for the bettering of herself as a person,

a girl who recognizes that actions speak louder than words, and who strives to inspire those around her to do the same,

and most of all, a Butterscotch Babe is:

a girl who understands that the most beautiful is natural beauty, because it comes without effort, it happens when you are not conscious of it, and it will outshine even the most perfect of features,

a girl who is comfortable in her own skin, not because she’s never doubted herself or been doubted by others, but because she’s arrived to this ease after experiencing the hard journey there,

and a girl who wears clothes and makeup not because she feels compelled or pressured to impress, but rather because she enjoys what is pleasing to the eye and what resonates with an artistic heart.

Project Runway 2014 | Challenge 6

SEASON SIX | EPISODE 6 | LIGHTS, CAMERA, SEW! Designers were assigned a movie genre to be inspired by, and had to create a look and a character that would fit into that world. This challenge, the models were not limited to female, nor to adults. Description counts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN

(Assigned Genre: Noir)

My main inspirations for my design were the use of light, shape, and shadow in the noir films. Instead of just going for black and white as expected, I used black, light blue, and the different shades of black sheer fabric to mimic the stereotypical "shadows from the blinds" effect you see. The neckline and silhouette were drawn from the genre's time, and the gloves mimic sheer stockings.

The character I was going for with her is a woman who is a sort of Jekyll and Hyde: an heiress who intentionally removes herself from social circles, and who doubles as an infamous jewel thief.

Project Runway 2014 | Challenge 4

SEASON FOUR | EPISODE 6 | EYE CANDY Designers must create a look using the candy and other products available in the Hershey's Store.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN

Since I also did a candy challenge for Season 10, I wanted to try to veer away from what I did last time as so not to fall back on the previous design; I feel like everyone opts for a dress, and it seems a bit of a cop-out, so this time I went for a really casual, overall shorts and cropped "hoodie" because I wanted to intentionally clash the stereotypical "sweet" connotation of the candy with really relaxed and rebellious attitude. I also feel that last time, I didn't really take advantage of the wide variety of candy and candy-related products, so I tried to incorporate the wrappers and other things as well.

I was stoked to find that my absolute favorite chocolate was in the Hershey Store, and so I used the Cadbury Roast Almond/Milk Chocolate Bar pieces on a muslin base to create the overall (where the thighs meet, the chocolate is shaved thinly, to prevent it rubbing together). The cuffs and the rosette "buttons" were created using the foil wrappers from the Hershey's Kisses Milk Chocolate with Caramel, and the Kisses design was made with one of the magnets from the Contemporary KISSES Chocolates Magnet Set.

The cropped, hooded jacket was made using the unfolded wrappers of the Hershey's Symphony Milk Chocolate Bar Almond Toffee, which I chose for the design to create a pinstripe effect as well as the blue script, which I used as decorative scrawl.

Project Runway 2014 | Challenge 3

SEASON THREE | EPISODE 2 | FIT FOR A QUEEN Designers must create a pageant-ready evening gown for the client of their choosing from among the 2013 Miss Universe contestants, keeping within a budget of $300. Description must contain details of material pricing and reasons for choosing model.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN
For my model/client, I chose Singapore's Shi Lim: of all the contestants, she was the only one that wasn't a carbon copy of that skewed "ideal" sense of "beauty" that media and society like to push. Rather, she was more relatable: pretty, but not overly made up or special, narrow hips and a small chest, yet she carried it with a confidence and maturity that I feel sets a better example of beauty than the porn-star-like image the rest gave off.

Since I find that most pageant dresses end up garish in their attempt to draw attention, I tried to keep the classy, mature impression that Shi Lim gives off by putting less emphasis on detailing and more on shape. I chose a deep blue for the fabric and deepened the feeling of royalty with the draping and neckline. To keep the dress from becoming dowdy and matronly, I went for a hi-low hem that sweeps out behind like a mermaid tail. To add color and the pageant kick tastefully, underneath are textured, gold tights that cover the shoes for a seamless quality, as well as a hint at the throat.

Since I'm not familiar with the names of fabrics--I go by sight and feel; I know what I want when I see it--these are approximations for my materials (meaning, they may not be this exact fabric, but something similar and similarly priced).

For styling and makeup, I did loose, elegant waves drawn back off the face, and swooping cat-eyes.

Project Runway 2014 | Challenge 2

SEASON TWO | EPISODE 2 | CLOTHES OFF OF YOUR BACK Designers must create a completely new look using the current outfit they are wearing, with an additional 2 yards of plain muslin as material.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN
Fortunately for me, we've been having an odd streak of chilly days recently, so the day the challenge was posted, I just so happened to be wearing a warmer shirt with more material (thank goodness, because all I've been wearing is tank tops and shorts lately). This is one of my favorite shirts, which I bought last year, solely for the drape of the fabric; I also intentionally bought this shirt in a larger size, so I've got plenty of fabric here.

I've utilized the natural hang of the fabric with the dress by doing a few gathers, and then letting it fall in all its glory. The bust is reinforced beneath by a layer of muslin, because I didn't want it to cling to the body, but I left the bottom as one layer so there was no bulk or interference with the movement.

I was set on the idea of a vest with that frayed denim "fringe", and I kept playing around with longer and shorter designs until I settled on a combination of both: the front is short and the back is long with tail-coat tails. The buttons from the jean fly and pockets are used on the vest, and the jean zipper is used on the hip of the dress.

The song "All That Jazz" was stuck in my head at the time, and I ended up using it in my inspiration for the overall look; the styling and makeup reflects the image I had in my mind--I was going for pinup girls and that sort of "fabulous glamour" feel.

Project Runway 2014 | Challenge 1

SEASON ONE | EPISODE 5 | MODEL CLIENTS Hosted by the fashion-oriented group Catwalk Challenge on deviantART.com comes Project Runway 2014, in which challenges are pulled from the episodes of previous seasons. Starting off the competition is a rewind back to PR's very first season. During the show, designers were assigned models and asked to create their dream wedding dress on a $300 budget; for this online version, designers can either choose to be the client, or appoint someone close to them. With an "imaginary" budget of the same amount, they must create the make-believe bride's dress to her true desires. Detailed description of the inspiration, the model's "must-haves", and so on count into the scoring.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN
I've actually already designed my "dream" wedding dress before, many years ago, but I still chose myself as the client because I've grown and changed a lot since then and the things and dreams I have in life has as well; I was interested in sitting down and rediscovering what that image would be now...and it has completely changed (meaning, this is a completely new design, don't worry).

Where before, I would have made it solely about the elaborateness and beauty of the look, now my focus is comfort--both with myself and the clothing--and the importance of the clothing working with the individual, while having a more elegant beauty, as opposed to an embellished beauty. The top is an ode to that penchant for decoration, but I cut it back so it doesn't overpower the shape of the dress: just some beading and embroidery. The neckline is a shape that I find is most flattering on me and has little peacock flower clasps. The beading on the shoulders is for show rather than function since a) I hate sleeves, and b) the bodice will be sturdy enough to stay up without slipping, while simultaneously not being so tight as it's uncomfortable.

My inspiration was Alphonse Mucha's (my favorite artist) drawings and the art nouveau style, so the bottom of the dress is one piece gathered accentuate the curves of the body before letting the fabric's movement and shape fall into it's own place. The front split in the skirt removes the potential for the clumsy bride to trip, as does the concept of a barefoot bride, since she hates things touching her feet, but still adds to the look I was going for.

The image that came to mind while coming up with the concept was something of old paintings of nymphs and elves in the woods or meadows making flower crowns, so the color of the fabric is more of a pearl white or a faded parchment sort of color with gold accents, like the gold edging of old books. (An image might I add, really reflects me.) This also soothes my itch to not have a white dress because I find it boring to be like everyone else, yet still keeps with the idea of white, purity, and virtue, which I do like.

The styling and makeup only strengthen the naturalness of the piece. The crown of the veil is made of gingko leaves and the veil itself is sheer, hanging low from the back of the head. I feel that the bride wearing makeup is pretentious; you should come as yourself to the alter, not some facade you've created, so makeup would be preferably nonexistent. (However, since my best friend is an artist in said area, and I love her dearly, I may let her have creative freedom...just because it's her.) The hair would be free-falling in its natural wave-curls (the length depends on how impulsive I am with the scissors before this point in my life).

Project Runway Season 10 | Finale

EPISODE 14 | FINALE
The remaining designers had to create seven more complete looks, while keeping in mind styling, cohesiveness with their previous three looks and showing off their aesthetic as a designer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGNS
To repeat, my inspiration for my collection is nostalgia: memories and things I used to love, mainly books, and the influence of Japanese style and culture. The color palette consists of jewel tones (along with their shades and tints) and metallics.

To be honest, I'm kind of disappointed with myself on this one. I redid the colors over and over, but ended up rushing to finish and so there isn't a set color palette anymore (and I hate the second-to-last pairing).  I took a step back afterwards and discovered I didn't hate the whole thing as much as I thought I did: I love the designs I created and I love the stained glass textile, but I need to fix the un-cohesiveness of the colors. I feel that maybe having such a vast array of colors in the textile made me feel overly ambitious and I didn't reign in the fabrics I paired with it.
Eventually, I would like to redo this collection and fix the colors, but I'm still going to leave this version up to show how and why I got the points, comments, etc. and to show how I did in the competition.

Kattahanna81: The designs are great, yes making your collection look more like one collection would have made it flow better. A few ways you could have done that is by taking the brown colored boots and jacket, make a few different belts or hair pieces or clutches of the same color. Second the mosaic that is a few shirts, a jacket, a dress, a skirt, you could have made it a belt, a hair piece, a necklace, a clutch etc. and those little touches I believe would have made your collection fit together better, believe me I have the same problem making a collection work together, with so many ideas, I don’t know what to do sometimes. I love the collection, don’t be so hard on your self, it is a great collection.

Kawaii-Kochou: I was very happy to see that the stained glass pattern made an appearance again! As you said yourself, keeping the colors in a bit closer to each other would be my own critique, but it doesn't hurt your collection much in my opinion. The styling is cohesive so I can tell they all fit together. I'm still in love with the third outfit and wish I had it to wear right now. Your showstopper gown is a work of art on it's own! At first I wasn't sure about the single sleeve idea, but after thinking about it without it, it's not as bold. Excellent work as always!

EPISODE 13 | SEMI-FINALS
The designers get more time, in which they must create three complete looks, (which will be part of a complete collection, if they advance to the finals) while keeping in mind styling, cohesiveness and showing off their aesthetic as a designer. Judging will decide who goes advances and shows a complete collection at Fashion Week!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN

My inspiration for my collection is nostalgia: memories and things I used to love. The color palette consists of jewel tones (along with their shades and tints) and metallics.

This specific outfit's inspiration is Japan, since I got obsessed with Japanese culture in middle school! :) I was inspired, specifically, by kimonos: the long skirt on this outfit overlaps the top, hugs the thighs, and then bells out at the knee. The shirt/top is geometric from the front, and then scoops in the back (which has boning like a corset). I took the reddish jewel tone for the top, and used a terra cotta color on the skirt, to go along with the sea-green of the purse. Also, the tassel around the waist represents my pastime of reading books (constantly): it adds a touch of the Japanese inspiration, and also references to the tassel on a bookmark.

Styling and accessories...

For this model's styling, I let her hair fall straight and then curl in naturally at the end. Her bangs curl out on one side, to match with the theme throughout the collection. She has a natural colored lip and her eyeliner curls around to meet with her eyebrow, to go along with the Asian-inspiration.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN

This design was meant to look simple from the front, with the back as the wow factor. I also used the book inspiration for this one, and the "bookmark" tassel in the back. The bottom of the dress is the same sweater material from the other one, just in a different color.

Styling and accessories...

For this model's styling, I followed through with the natural edge, and with the curled bangs. She has a natural colored lip and her eyeliner curls around to meet with her eyebrow, to go along with the Asian-inspiration.

  • VINCE CAMUTO Timmons Dazzle Leather Pumps [link]
  • VINCE CAMUTO Hair Calf Leather Clutch Bag [link]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN

The upper right design is a textile pattern that I created of my signature crown stained-glass style! When I was little, my family and I went to a church that had these gorgeous stained-glass windows, and they've always sort of stuck in my mind as a part of being young, so I decided to incorporate them into the collection.

I used the pattern on the bottom, which is designed to almost look like capris from a distance, but is actually a skirt. The shirt is made of sweater material, cut with a deep scoop neck to reveal the underlying shirt.

I don't really like how the colors matched up on this one, but I suppose I could change it later if I get through to the final round (the designers who passed on the show were told to fix things, so I should too).

Styling and accessories...

For this model's styling, I swept her hair around in a mermaid style. She has a natural colored lip and her eyeliner curls around to meet with her eyebrow, to go along with the Asian-inspiration.

JUDGES COMMENTS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

>Kawaii-Kochou: I don't think I could pull it off, but I LOVE that stained glass skirt! The capri look is very clever, and it's a gorgeous piece overall. At first glance, I thought that the green/blue dress was too simple, but the back definitely saves it and gives it a wow factor. The last outfit is the weakest, but by no means weak. The stylization is beautiful, and I definitely see the Japanese influence in it. A very well put together collection.

>JennaLynHarms: The one reason that this tied with Kimiko's (another contestant) collection is because I couldn't really see where the collection overall was going. It looked like three different looks for maybe two different collections. I do appreciate the colors - Yay! For color - as well as the bookmark tassel accessories. My only complaint would be the stained glass skirt. If it's intended to be that wow piece in your collection then okay but there needs to be something to tie it in with the rest.  The shirt that is paired with though,I wouldn't mind having for myself.

>MissKitty: I like the idea of doing a jeweled tone collection but it can get a bit lost with the variety of colors if they don't tie into each other. I also found the construction of the stained glass skirt to be a bit distracting compared to all the other looks.

>XenoPup: I really like the use of color and the styling. The added accessories work well with each of the looks. The stained glass skirt has a real chance at being the "wow" piece in this collection.

Project Runway | Episode 12

EPISODE 12 | IN A PLACE FAR, FAR AWAY
This episode was the L'Oreal Paris line challenge for the season. The designers were brought out to Oheka Castle on Long Island and presented with L'Oreal Electric Fantasie collection: Enchanted Queen, which is "both powerful and bewitching in tones of black and berry", Seductive Temptress which is "one part charming and the the other part venomous with hues of gold and deep Bordeaux", Wise Mystic, "to mesmerize in violets and blues", and Artsy Muse, "to allure you with shades of pastels and corals." The challenge was to create an Avante Garde look based upon one of the above color palettes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN
  • Makeup Palette: Seductive Temptress (can be seen here)

My goal was to make something that looked both high fashion and rock and roll at the same time (you know me), and I couldn't decide whether I could achieve this with a coat or a dress...so I went with both! The fabric is thick enough to be a coat, but not so thick that you couldn't wear it as a gown. The collar can be folded down for a slightly softer look, and the whole thing is reversible, so one could wear it green snakeskin-side out, if they so desired. Beneath the main piece is a lacy sheath with boning and corsetry up top. The coat is bronze, by the way (my scanner makes it seem brown).

Styling and accessories...

Her hair would be free and flowing with gentle hints of curl here and there, and the makeup would be the Kiss Lipstick, Blush, the two browns (dark and light) from the Gaze eyeshadow, and the snakeskin nail stickers on the index and middle fingers with the other nails painted with the Temptress' Power polish (all from the Enchanted Temptress palette).

EPISODE 11 | ITS FASHION, BABY!
For this episode, the designers were taken to Babies-R-Us for a look at Heidi Klum's personal fashion line for kids: Truly Scrumptious. There they got to meet with their "clients" and...the mothers! The challenge was to design a toddlers look that both fit into the collection and satisfied the mom, and also design a companion piece for the mother!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN

The child: I decided to go with smart casual for the boy's outfit, pairing a denim vest that snaps closed over a t-shirt (with the little monster print from Heidi's line), a soft hat, grey cargo pants with patterned pockets, and light blue Converse-lookalike shoes.

For the mother's outfit, I took the lighter shade of blue from the child color palette for a simple dress with a ruffled collar, and then added a jewel blue cardigan over the top. The outfit could be dressed up for events or dressed down for a more casual day.

Both outfits would be no fuss, no muss: easy to put on, clean, and look stylish in.

Project Runway Season 10 | Episode 10

EPISODE 10 | I GET A KICK OUT OF FASHION
For this episode, the designers were asked to create a stage outfit for the world renowned Rockettes. Sounds simple, but there were a lot of things to keep in mind: the uniforms have to look good up close and from a distance, sexy, but not slutty -- always classy -- and the material must be something easy to move around in!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN

I must have redone this design a hundred times before I was satisfied! I originally wanted to incorporate corsets and gothic lolita style, but all of those sketches looked too slutty, so I ended up scratching that idea. In the end, I also ended up using colors that I wouldn't usually use (greens) and focused on creating lines and shapes across the body. With white netting and beading over stretchy fabric, the top is easy to move in, but will have the practical use of holding the dancer in place. For the bottom, I chose a filmy material to go in layers to retain a similar effect with the skirt that I wanted to do with the gothic lolita, but more subtle. Also, it is overlaid with bead strings to bounce jauntily as the dancers kick.

Styling and accessories...

To add a small flash of color, the model is wearing a Robert Rose Goldtone Colorful Ring, and Steve Madden Bow Derek Platform Pumps that are sweet, but will not detract from the main attraction: the dancer and the outfit.

All accessories are from Project Runway's Lord & Taylor wall.

Project Runway Season 10 | Episode 9

EPISODE 9 | IT'S ALL ABOUT ME
In this round, the designers were allowed to see someone important to them in order to design a fabric pattern inspired by their heritage. The pattern would be used to create a look, and had to make up at least 50% of the design.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN

The textile pattern is a clock face made up of keys and keyholes, surrounded by a maze and walls. It represents how much I've struggled from day to day with both my art and life. For every obstacle I overcome, there's another wall and even less time; every time I think I'm happy with how far I've come, I just realize that I still am not in a good place. From a distance, the pattern will seem basic and simple, but when you get up close, you can see all the details (showing how people assume that I'm always calm and not bothered by things, but in reality, I stress over and regret every little thing).

For the actual dress, I thought about doing a hood to represent the part of me that always wants to hide from things, but in the end, it distracted from what I wanted to achieve here. The shape of the panels are supposed to mimic pages of a book (which symbolizes many, many things about me), and the colors and general look of the pattern link in my Polish ancestry.

Styling and accessories...

Shoes are Vince Kamuto Kira Leather Peep Toe Pumps.

All accessories are from Project Runway's Lord & Taylor wall.

Project Runway Season 10 | Episode 8

EPISODE 8 | STARVING ARTISTS
For this episode, the contestants were once again divided up into teams (online modification -- designers worked separately, but were assigned one of the color palettes used by the teams on the show.) Only, instead of just creating final looks, they had to design accessories, t-shirts and tank tops to sell for their Mood money! (Since this would not work for the online version, designers had to incorporate a graphic t-shirt in their design.) Working together, each team had to create two, autumn outerwear looks!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN
  •  Color Palette: Hunter Green, Camel, Brown, Light Gray, Brown Leather

I chose to do an army-style jacket to go over the first look. I debated between a zipper and buttons, but I ended up choosing snaps. When closed, one flap on the collar of the jacket overlaps the other side. To me, this is the casual look, so I paired the tee and some pants with it. For the shirt, I used the different browns to create a sort of candy and chocolate look with my crown logo, to reflect the sweet and young aspect of my style. The pants are simple and grey.

For the second look, I wanted to do a sweater-dress (of course). Initially, I was afraid that the neck and collar seemed a bit too stiff and harsh, but the soft color helped get the effect I wanted. The pockets are flat and zippered, so that they won't add any extra bulk to the hips. I paired it with grey leggings, to link it to the pants on the first look.

I'm really happy how both of these came out! I feel like my aesthetic has shown through the best on this challenge. :)

Styling and accessories...

For the left-side design, I braided her hair back in a French braid and gave her a cat eye. Her accessories are Robert Rose Bracelet Silver Bracelet (it's supposed to show when she takes off the jacket) and Enzo Angolini Yareena Studded Ankle Boots.

For the right side design, I chose to draw a new model (since obviously the designers used two different girls). I wanted her to have short, glossy black hair that was cut with rougher edges. She also has a black cat-eye. Her accessories are Jessica Simpson Long Boots Brown Leather and Ralph Lauren Hand Bag Brown Leather.

All accessories are from Project Runway's Lord & Taylor wall.

Project Runway Season 10 | Episode 7

EPISODE 7 | OH, MY LORD AND TAYLOR!
For this challenge the contestants were to design and create looks that would fit into the Project Runway 10th Anniversary commemorative collection that is going to be carried at Lord & Taylor stores. The winning look would become the 10th piece in the collection but it had to fit into the L&T aesthetic, the collection and a $200-300 sale point budget. Online restriction -- no black!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN
It was definitely a pain in a butt to do something simple. Ironically, a lot of my previous designs aren't overly-complex...maybe it was just because I was over-thinking "simple".  Anyway...since we weren't allowed to use black, and since the rest of the collection was mostly warm colors, I chose to go with gunmetal grey, to balance with the other grey dress and the blue one.

I tried to tie the dress in with the collection with the waistline, and with the neckline by expanding the round neckline further down for variance. Other than that, its simple, simple, simple. I added a bronze zipper for a bit of color.

Styling and accessories...

The hair is just some soft waves and the makeup is in natural tones.
All accessories are from Project Runway's Lord & Taylor wall.

Project Runway Season 10 | Episode 5

EPISODE 5 | THE MARIE CLAIRE TEAM CHALLENGE
Another business woman challenge! Each designer must create two looks using the assigned color palettes, taken from the show's teams.

Team One Color Palette: black, white, teal, fuchsia, purple

Team Two Color Palette: navy, bright blue, smokey grey, white, black

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN
>Color: For my two designs, I used all the colors in my assigned palette except for the black, because I figured that most of the rest of the "team" would gravitate towards that.

>Left: The blouse is smoky grey with bright blue pleats to liven it up and tie it into the bottom. As for the skirt, I put a twist on the classic work silhouette with a fishtail pencil skirt with a military-esque waist.

>Right: For the second look, I wanted to do something very different from the first, so I went with a smart jacket. The top is navy, and the mid-to-bottom is bright blue (I tried to stick with similar textures and fabric that the team did on the show with this). The skirt is simple so that it doesn't distract from the attention of the jacket
Styling and accessories...

The styling would be very clean and minimal, since it is business wear, so I went with natural makeups and a simple ponytail. As for the accessories, I also kept it minimal because lots of them can be distracting and inappropriate in a work space. I specifically avoided peep-toe shoes, because they're a big no-no for work.

Project Runway Season 10 | Episode 4

EPISODE 4 | THE WOMAN ON THE GO
The Michael Kors Challenge! For this round, the designers had to create a look for a busy woman on the go, able to transition from day to evening - errands, dinner, work, etc. The design also had to clearly show the designer's aesthetic, and they explained who the woman was that they were designing for.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN
The woman I designed this for writes science fiction novels by day, and is a justice crime fighter/detective by night. Thus, the outfit can function for her lazy days, for when she's writing, or for a meeting with her editor, AND it serves as a butt-kicking outfit for when she sneaks up behind criminals and whacks them with her baseball bat (or her bag full of notebooks and pens) in dark alleys. :3

:) This is definitely a designs that reflects me. I love clothes that can go from casual to dressy, depending on my ever-changing mood. Also, comfort is a big thing too - why bother with pretty clothes that irritate you?

Styling and accessories...

I went for a minimalistic approach with her makeup, since I prefer next to no make up, and also because my "client" here would be someone who just puts on a little mascara, eyeliner and goes. I also wanted her hair to look wavy and a little like she just got up, brushed it and went, to reflect the sort of indifference about her appearance because she knows she doesn't need much to look good.

All accessories are from Project Runway's Lord & Taylor wall.

Project Runway Season 10 | Challenge 3

EPISODE 3 | LEXUS (TEAM) CHALLENGE The dreaded team challenge! Designers were paired up and assigned a 2013 GS Lexus model, which drove them to meet their client: a previous contestant on Project Runway. Using the color of their Lexus, the teams had to design an outfit for their client to wear to the Emmys! All in all, their design had to show the aesthetic of both designers on the team, had to be something appropriate for the Emmys, had to be the color of their Lexus model, and had to be something the client liked.*

*For #CatwalkChallenge's version of PR, teams had to be negated, since it would be highly difficult for both designers to design something together over the internet. Instead, there would be two designers with the same client and Lexus color, but they would each do their own design using these two points.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT MY DESIGN
(Client) Mila Hermanovski
(Her aesthetic) edgy, structured, color blocking, mix of men's wear.
(Lexus Color) Satin Cashmere Metallic
I felt that this might be a trap to make me do another jacket, so I decided to put a twist on it! To incorporate menswear, I began with a tuxedo approach, but put my twist by also mixing the look of S-bend corsets into it with the boning and detail of the waist. The "hem" of the "jacket" is just an illusion, since the dress is actually all one piece; from a distance, it will appear to be two pieces, but up close you will be able to tell that it is a single thing. The neckline helps to make it appear as if it is a jacket over a sheath, but it is just a false "second" piece.

Styling and accessories. Personally, I think that Mila looks gorgeous and dresses well for her age. Since I've only ever seen her with her hair down, I thought for this dress's accompanying styling, to have her hair up. It would simply be pulled back, and her eyes would be lined thinly with a sea-green and black eyeliner.

All accessories are from Project Runway's Lord & Taylor wall.
  • Michael Kors (Berkley Patent Leather T-Strap Sandals)
  • Robert Rose (Necklace Blue and Green Beads)

Judges Comments:
"I think this fits your client's design aesthetic wonderfully. While you didn't incorporate any other colors, the structuring and pattern blocking gives it an edgy yet sophisticated feel.  I especially like the false undershirt and bodice."
"Your client stated that she wanted something color blocked,  yet you did not do it.  Interesting."
